Participate in the celebration of the USS New York LPD-21 and become a part of history as she sails past the World Trade Center Site The City of Jersey City, the JC Police and Fire Departments will be hosting a NJ contigent for the event to display our respect for the USS New York at the Exchange Place waterfront area.

Many of your men and women spent countless hours on September 11, 2001 and the many days after assisting so many people in need. This event can help many in the healing process, as something new and, so important rises from the WTC Steel recovered from Ground Zero. I believe the souls lost on 9-11-01 comprise the Spirit of the USS New York .

It is my prayer that this Spirit will guide and protect the crew who serve the USS New York, as they sail into harm’s way to protect Our Country and preserve our Freedom. Please ask your Honor Guard units and Uniformed personnel to arrive at the Exchange Place Waterfront NO LATER THAN 0700 Hrs on November 2,2009.

ALL Uniformed personnel will report to the Jersey City Fire Ladder co’s displaying the Large United States Flag to obtain event instructions for proper placement in the formation. The City of Jersey City ,in coordination with NJ Transit Police, is providing Light Rail transportation to the Exchange Place waterfront free of charge for this event.

Free Parking is available at the NJ Transit Light Rail station at Claremont Avenue and West Side Avenue Jersey City 07305. Directions: NJ Turnpike Exit 15 E, go east on Rt 1& 9 over the Hackensack River. Bear right onto Rt 440 South and go into traffic circle to make U turn at Culver Avenue ( which is right past Hudson Toyota) Make a left at the light and go back onto Rt440 North and make 1st right onto Claremont Ave. Go 1 block and a VERY LARGE NJ Transit Parking Lot is on right.

The Commissioning of USS New York will take place on November 7th, 2009 at the Intrepid Museum at 46th St & 12th Ave, New York City, New York, USA.

PCU New York will pass under the Verrazano Bridge and be joined by a flotilla of boats from Federal, State and City organizations as well as local municipalities, ferry companies and private boats.

Many of these vessels responded on 9-11 to assist with evacuation, some with firefighting and some with the aftermath as New York struggled to clean-up and rebuild. A few are named after heroes who fell that terrible day, like PCU New York. They all come to pay respect to what was lost and to welcome what has returned. It is here, at this time and place that we draw a line in the sand and say…

Its been 2948 days since the attack, more than a day for every man, woman and child killed. The greatest testament to our resolve is being Commissioned into service with the United States Navy. There will be speeches, songs, tears, and emotions so strong its hard to speak.

With the words “Man your ship and bring her to life” the world will change At least for us She will never fill the hole, but she will fill our hearts.

Navy ship commemorates heroes and victims of the 9/11 Pentagon attack

The Arlington County Board today made appointments to the Commissioning Committee for the USS Arlington, a new U.S. Navy ship (San Antonio Class) currently under construction. The USS Arlington is scheduled to be commissioned in 2011, and is being built to honor the heroes and victims of the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon in 2001.

“Our community will never forget the tragic events of September 11^th,” said Paul Ferguson, Chairman of the Arlington County Board. “The USS Arlington will stand as a living tribute to those brave men and women who risked their lives to save others and we are grateful to the Commissioning Committee for their leadership.”

The Committee will be responsible for fundraising and maintenance of a long-term relationship between the ship, its crew, and Arlington County and will also address a timeline, fundraising issues, and a recommended process for the commissioning of the USS Arlington, including an assessment of the financial implications for the County.

As part of its charge, the committee shall make its final recommendations to the Board by no later than December 1, 2007.

The USS Arlington Commissioning Committee
The Arlington County Board appointed the following members to the Commissioning Committee:

• Rosemary Dillard, whose husband was killed in the Pentagon on 9/11
• Pat Hymel Lipinski, whose former husband was killed in the Pentagon on 9/11 and former principal at Hoffman-Boston Elementary School
• Lisa Dolan, whose husband, Navy Captain Bob Dolan, was killed at the Pentagon on 9/11
• Rodney White – Arlington County Fire Department firefighter/paramedic
• Wilbur R. Gray – Arlington County Fire Department Battalion Chief
• Admiral Stansfield Turner, former Director of Central Intelligence Agency
• Nancy Gorell – President of the No. Va. Council of Navy League
• Admiral John Foley – Vice President, Business Development/Strategic Planning, Northrup Grumman

Additional members will be appointed at a later time.

Background:
In September 2005, the Navy held a ceremony at the Pentagon to name the USS Arlington and the USS Somerset in honor of the heroes and victims of the Pentagon attack and the flight downed in Pennsylvania. The ceremony also honored the sacrifices of those who provided critical assistance both during and after the attack of 9/11, including the emergency, fire, and rescue personnel of Arlington County.

The Arlington and Somerset are the latest additions to the San Antonio Class of amphibious transport dock ships–the first to be designed from the keel up. This class is set to replace 27 amphibious ships from the three classes of amphibious ships now in service. An earlier ship of the same class, the USS New York, was named for the World Trade Center victims in New York. With an overall length of 684 feet, the San Antonio Class ships are designed to accommodate 1,200 sailors and Marines and their equipment.
