Navy Accepts Delivery of Future USS New York

WASHINGTON (NNS) — The Navy officially accepted delivery of the future USS New York (LPD 21) from Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding (NGSB) during a ceremony Aug. 21 at the company’s Avondale shipyard in New Orleans.

New York is the first of three LPD 17-class ships built in honor of the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The ship’s bow stem was constructed using 7.5 tons of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center. The Navy named the eighth and ninth ships of the class – Arlington and Somerset – in honor of the victims of the attacks on the Pentagon and United Flight 93 respectively. Arlington and Somerset are also incorporating materials salvaged from those sites.
New York completed acceptance trials July 24, performing well for the Navy’s Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV). During the detailed inspection, all shipboard systems and equipment, including combat, ship, machinery control and mission systems, were successfully demonstrated during a series of demanding inport and at-sea test events. This trial confirmed the continuing improved class trend in system design specifications and quality assurance programs.
“This ship will be a symbol,” said Capt. Bill Galinis, the LPD 17-class program manager for the Navy’s Program Executive Office for Ships. “The Navy and the shipbuilder have worked hand-in-hand to deliver this highly capable warship to the Navy and our nation. It has been a tremendous privilege for all of us who have had an opportunity to participate in the construction of this ship.”
The principal mission of LPD 17-class amphibious transport dock ships is to transport and deploy the necessary combat and support elements of Marine expeditionary units and brigades. The ship will carry approximately 720 troops and have the capability of transporting and debarking air cushion (LCAC) or conventional landing craft and expeditionary fighting vehicles (EFV), augmented by helicopters or vertical take off and landing aircraft (MV 22). These ships will support amphibious assault, special operations and expeditionary warfare missions through the first half of the 21st century.
New York is the fifth ship of the LPD 17-class and the fifth ship in the Navy to be named after the Empire State. Arrival in New York is scheduled for November. Early events will be focused on ship’s crew, their families, first responders and 9/11 families. Public viewing is scheduled in the days prior to and days following the commissioning, slated for Nov. 7.

SEAL
The coat of arms as blazoned in full color upon a white oval enclosed by a blue collar edged on the outside with a gold chain and bearing the inscription “USS NEW YORK” at top and “LPD 21” in base all gold.
SYMBOLISM
SHIELD: Dark blue and gold, the colors traditionally associated with the Navy, represent the sea and excellence. The red is for sacrifice and valor and the white recalls purity of purpose. The gray chevron and two vertical bars represent the bow of LPD 21 and the Twin Towers, respectively. They are conjoined to emphasize the using of 24 tons of steel from the ruins of the World Trade Center to construct the bow of the USS New York. The phoenix rising personifies the hope and determination of this Nation to rebuild and regroup to fight terrorism. The shield on the phoenix’s breast honors the New York City Fire department, New York City Police Department and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Red is for the Fire Department, the dark blue is the traditional blue for the Police Department and the Celeste is taken from the patch of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Celeste also alludes to coastal waters and the port of New York. The red drops represent blood shed and the ultimate sacrifice made by the men and women of 9/11. The stars commemorate the three battle stars the USS New York battleship earned in World War II. The border of the shield is adapted from the State of New York Seal.
CREST: The mountains, lake and sun rays highlight the State of New York and are adapted from the State Seal and highlight beauty and the heritage of the State. The seven rays represent the number of rays on Statue of Liberty’s Crown. They symbolize the seven seas and continents of the world and also suggest a direct connection to the littoral missions of the USS New York anywhere in the world, past and present. The sugar maple is the state tree of New York.
SUPPORTERS: The crossed naval and marine swords symbolize the teamwork of the Navy-Marine war fighting team of the amphibious assault warship, USS New York. The enlisted swords further highlight the enlisted soldiers and sailors as being the back bone of our Armed Forces.

232 years ago on October 11th 1776, New York fought in the first naval engagement of the fledging US Navy
On one side you had the British Empire led by Sir Guy Carleton with 30 major ships and 1670 trained seamen trying to cut the colonies in half and hopefully ending the independence movement. On the other side you have Benedict Arnold with 800 motley crew manning 16 ships, some built just days ago. Their job is to stop the British by whatever means possible to buy time. Arnold had his ships anchor on the east side of Valcour Island knowing that the British, after rounding the island would have the winds in their faces as they tried to engage the American ships. The battle started in earnest at 11 am, the Americans suffered greatly throughout the day with the Royal Savage run aground and abandoned, the Philadelphia holed and sunk and Congress, Washington, Jersey and New York badly damaged. The Americans had suffered 60 casualties including New York’s first victim who was killed when a cannon exploded onboard. The British set the Royal Savage on fire and she burned into the evening. At dusk Arnold held a war council with his remaining commanders onboard Congress and it was agreed to make a run for it under the cover of darkness and make way for Crown Point. At daybreak the British discovered to their horror that the Americans had escaped and they set off in pursuit. A running gun battle ensued and one by one the battered fleet was overtaken by the British until only the Congress and four gunboats remained. Arnold realized that reaching Crown Point by water was no longer an option so he grounded what was left of his squadron in Ferris Bay and burned them to prevent their capture.

The future USS New York LPD-21 under construction at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems’ shipyard in Avondale, LA, will be the fifth amphibious transport dock of the San Antonio class. The ship was named New York after the state and incorporates in its construction steel salvaged from the World Trade Centers. Her ship motto is "Never Forget." "We're very proud that the twisted steel from the WTC towers will soon be used to forge an even stronger national defense," New York Gov. George Pataki spoke in 2002. "The USS New York will soon be defending freedom and combating terrorism around the globe, while also ensuring that the world never forgets the evil attacks of Sept. 11 and the courage and strength New Yorkers showed.” This will be the seventh U.S. ship named New York.
