I just read a comment from an earlier post from a former crewman of the Uss Bladen (APA 63). My grandfather also served aboard the Uss Bladen and I just thought that was cool to see someone posting here who served with him.

Godspeed and smooth sailing to the Commander and Crew of the USS New York in protecting the Free World and the sea lanes along with bringing the war to terrorists in all corners of the world along with our allies we will achieve Victory bringing peace to the world. I served USAF K9 (74-78) and also State Guard in response to the September 11th terror attacks. My deepest sympathy and support to Arlene Howard of Hicksville(USN WW2) who lost her beloved son in the WTC attacks. And in deep rememberance of 1SG Al Otero who was one of the first NY Guard members to respond to the terror attacks. 1st SGT Otero was killed in a car crash and was buried with full military honors. He also was a Vietnam Veteran. And my deepest thanks to COL James F. Whallen and COL Levy of the NY Guard who led the 14th Brigrade during the dark days after September 11th. Second to none.

Onward to Victory lead by the USS New York and steel from WTC and the heart of the Big Apple.

God Bless America !! Land of the Free, Home of the Brave.

As a former (WWII) amphibious boat officer in WWII, having landed Marines on Iwo Jima and Okinawa, I take pride in the commissioning of the USS New York, an amphibious assault ship. It is a far cry from our ship, the USS Bladen (APA 63), carrying on an important Navy function.

As a Navy veteran and a native of New York I am so proud to see this ship made with the steel from the towers. It is the one true way that we as Americans can tell the terrorists of the world that "you may have been able to fool us once but you can't keep us down" I just wish I had been there when the 21 gun salute went off and at the commissioning. Anchors Aweigh USS New York. May your crew always be safe.
