I would luv to put 10 Vietnam Vets into my motorhome and be a part of the History that will be made on the commissioning of the USS New York. We have never been to "Ground Zero" and would luv to see it on the day the USS New York is commissioned. We want to pay tribute to those that lost so much, and applaud the use of that steel to hunt down terriorists. May God Bless America, and all it's citizens.

Want to know if arrangements have been made to include the 9/11 families in the commissioning ceremony. If Not Why Not?Since they lost the most or if you will; sacrificed the most there should be no question about their inclusion
If there are no plans to include them I do think the media should be advised of this as I believe many people would strongly object to their being treated in such a cavalier fashion.
We shall await your reply and we wish the ship fair sailing and good weather
Sincerely
Audrey MacMillan

I am asking for some assistance. My son PFC Travis Meyer is assigned to the Amphibious Assault Battalion at Camp Lejeune, NC. He was informed that he will be a crewmember of the amtrack that will be boarding as part of the Commissioning ceremonies in November for the USS New York. Being somewhat new at this, how will I find out if he is also considered a crew member of the ship? From what I have been able to find out, family members of the crew will be invited aboard. I plan on going to be a part of this regardless.

I can understand your feeling that way. They rejected my proposal to build an huge Eagle out of the rubble. See... www.ussnewyork.com/freedomplaza . It would have been so much better if Ground Zero was finished and there was a nice memorial to go there and see. Navy ships are as much a weapon of peace as a weapon of war, its the lack of an effective fighting force that has led to attacks in the past. The military has a tradition of naming vessels, bases and weapon systems after important public figures, fallen servicemembers and pivotal battles and New York was a battle we lost. Other ships that have followed in this tradition are...USS Iwo Jima, USS Lake Champlain, USS Yorktown, USS Sullivans, USS Shangi La, USS Midway, USS Tarawa, the list goes on and on. Thanks for your input.

It may be just me, but I can not help feel terribly sad and see it as such a tragic thing that from the ruins of such a majestic building where so many lives were lost in such a horrific manner that instead of building a monument to peace and harmony a weapon of war has been made and dedicated to their loss.

As a Ground Zero volunteer during the rescue and recovery efforts of 2001 I am greatly anticipating this historic commisioning. Our 60' X 30' American Flag that hung over Ground Zero was unfurled on the USS Intrepid when she returned to NY Harbor in 2008. It would be a great honor if you would consider having our flag aboard the USS New York as she steamed past Ground Zero...
