We have never been to "Ground Zero" and would luv to see it on the day the USS New York is commissioned. We want to pay tribute to those that lost so much, and applaud the use of that steel to hunt down terriorists. May God Bless America, and all it's citizens. My son PFC Travis Meyer is assigned to the Amphibious Assault Battalion at Camp Lejeune, NC. He was informed that he will be a crewmember of the amtrack that will be boarding as part of the Commissioning ceremonies in November for the USS New York. Being somewhat new at this, how will I find out if he is also considered a crew member of the ship? From what I have been able to find out, family members of the crew will be invited aboard. Navy ships are as much a weapon of peace as a weapon of war, its the lack of an effective fighting force that has led to attacks in the past. The military has a tradition of naming vessels, bases and weapon systems after important public figures, fallen servicemembers and pivotal battles and New York was a battle we lost. Other ships that have followed in this tradition are...USS Iwo Jima, USS Lake Champlain, USS Yorktown, USS Sullivans, USS Shangi La, USS Midway, USS Tarawa, the list goes on and on.
