The USS New York Commissioning Ceremony

April 26th, 2009

Filed under: News — admin @ 12:55 pm

The Commissioning of PCU New York will take place on November 7th, 2009 at the Intrepid Museum Pier 88 South, Pier 86 North New York City, NY, 10036, USA.

Finally, some of what we lost returns, The USS New York, LPD-21, will parade into New York Harbor on Monday, November 2nd of 2009 for what will undoubtedly be the Commissioning event of the century. No other ship in world history carries the sentiment and import this ship possesses. In her bow is 7.5 tons of World Trade Center Steel, on her decks are the best and brightest crew this nation can produce and in our hearts, the hopes and dreams of a nation that will not be kept down. Please join us for the Feel Good America event of our generation, we all knew where we were when they fell, you want to be here when they return!

Monday, November 2nd, 2009 – Harbor entrance
PCU New York will pass under the Verrazano Bridge and be joined by a flotilla of boats from Federal, State and City organizations as well as local municipalities, ferry companies and private boats. Many of these vessels responded on 9-11 to assist with evacuation, some with firefighting and some with the aftermath as New York struggled to clean-up and rebuild. A few are named after heroes who fell that terrible day, like PCU New York. Many were the vessels that turned Flight 1549 from an air crash into a Miracle. They all come to pay respect to what was lost and to welcome what has returned. It is here, at this time and place that we draw a line in the sand and say, We Will Never Forget.
Many events are being planned for the week with public visitation of this great ship a priority. As schedules firm up we will post that information.

Saturday, November 7th, 2009 – Commissioning Day for PCU New York
Its been 2948 days since the attack, more than a day for every man, woman and child killed. The greatest testament to our resolve is being commissioned into service with the United States Navy. There will be speeches, songs, tears, and emotions so strong its hard to speak. With the words Man your ship and bring her to life the world will change, at least for us. She will never fill the hole, but she will fill our hearts.

  1. As a Korean Veteran US Navy USS Boxer CV 21, I can tell you i could not be more proud, of the USS New York LPD 21. That number 21 (Black Jack), has a special meaning, that i am sure will transmit to the USS New York PROUD FUTURE. ThEt Steel that was used from the World Trade Center, is the the ralling cry “NEVER FORGET. God Speed!

  2. As a Ground Zero volunteer during the rescue and recovery efforts of 2001 I am greatly anticipating this historic commisioning. Our 60′ X 30′ American Flag that hung over Ground Zero was unfurled on the USS Intrepid when she returned to NY Harbor in 2008. It would be a great honor if you would consider having our flag aboard the USS New York as she steamed past Ground Zero…

  3. It may be just me, but I can not help feel terribly sad and see it as such a tragic thing that from the ruins of such a majestic building where so many lives were lost in such a horrific manner that instead of building a monument to peace and harmony a weapon of war has been made and dedicated to their loss.

  4. I can understand your feeling that way. They rejected my proposal to build an huge Eagle out of the rubble. See… http://www.ussnewyork.com/freedomplaza . It would have been so much better if Ground Zero was finished and there was a nice memorial to go there and see. Navy ships are as much a weapon of peace as a weapon of war, its the lack of an effective fighting force that has led to attacks in the past. The military has a tradition of naming vessels, bases and weapon systems after important public figures, fallen servicemembers and pivotal battles and New York was a battle we lost. Other ships that have followed in this tradition are…USS Iwo Jima, USS Lake Champlain, USS Yorktown, USS Sullivans, USS Shangi La, USS Midway, USS Tarawa, the list goes on and on. Thanks for your input.

  6. I am asking for some assistance. My son PFC Travis Meyer is assigned to the Amphibious Assault Battalion at Camp Lejeune, NC. He was informed that he will be a crewmember of the amtrack that will be boarding as part of the Commissioning ceremonies in November for the USS New York. Being somewhat new at this, how will I find out if he is also considered a crew member of the ship? From what I have been able to find out, family members of the crew will be invited aboard. I plan on going to be a part of this regardless.

  8. Want to know if arrangements have been made to include the 9/11 families in the commissioning ceremony. If Not Why Not?Since they lost the most or if you will; sacrificed the most there should be no question about their inclusion
If there are no plans to include them I do think the media should be advised of this as I believe many people would strongly object to their being treated in such a cavalier fashion.
We shall await your reply and we wish the ship fair sailing and good weather
    Sincerely
    Audrey MacMillan

  9. I would luv to put 10 Vietnam Vets into my motorhome and be a part of the History that will be made on the commissioning of the USS New York. We have never been to “Ground Zero” and would luv to see it on the day the USS New York is commissioned. We want to pay tribute to those that lost so much, and applaud the use of that steel to hunt down terriorists. May God Bless America, and all it’s citizens.

The future USS New York LPD-21 under construction at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems’ shipyard in Avondale, LA, will be the fifth amphibious transport dock of the San Antonio class. The ship was named New York after the state and incorporates in its construction steel salvaged from the World Trade Centers. Her ship motto is "Never Forget." "We're very proud that the twisted steel from the WTC towers will soon be used to forge an even stronger national defense," New York Gov. George Pataki spoke in 2002. "The USS New York will soon be defending freedom and combating terrorism around the globe, while also ensuring that the world never forgets the evil attacks of Sept. 11 and the courage and strength New Yorkers showed.” This will be the seventh U.S. ship named New York.
